It’s wrong, they tell you. The one constant you know to be true, even when the rest of the world flips upside down and turns inside out. The one thing that’s branded, burned inside of you. Thicker than blood. Practically hardwired into your DNA.

You love her as automatically as you breathe. You’d do anything for her, anything to ensure that she’s safe, that she’s happy. Even at the cost of your own life.

Her life means more than yours ever did, anyway.

You’re a fool, they say. You’re a fool, Peeta Mellark. Too blinded to see what’s really before your eyes. They taunt, they chide. All the standard methods of torture have been forgone in lieu of injecting poison into your veins. Of feeding you lies.

You only stare back with hard resolve. Your conviction, everything you hold dear at your core is stronger than their manipulation. They cannot take your one basic truth. No matter what, you won’t be a piece in their games.

They up the dosage.

Slowly, the voices start to linger. It’s barely noticeable at first; just the barest shade of a whisper in the middle of the night. But a whisper that manages to lodge itself into the darkest corners of your mind, only to resurface, over and over again, with increasing volume and force, suggesting the most unspeakable. You fight. You fight with everything you have. You scrunch your eyes shut, you grit your teeth, you dig your nails into your palms until they bleed.

But everything you have is no match for the real truth.

Now you see it. You see a light, shiny, where you were once blind, illuminating what you refused to accept. The girl you loved is nothing but a monster. A liar, a manipulator. A mutt. One that has obviously made it clear that your life is not valued.


Katniss Everdeen is going to kill you.
